The mimic octopus is one hell of a cool animal as these pictures and video show! Octopuses are thought to be one of the most intelligent invertebrates and can change the color and texture of their skin to blend in with rocks, algae, or coral to avoid predators. But until now, an octopus with the ability to actually assume the appearance of another animal had never been observed...Until now!
The Indonesian Mimic Octopus, Thaumoctopus mimicus. This fascinating creature was discovered in 1998 off the coast of Sulawesi in Indonesia, the mimic octopus is the first known species to take on the characteristics of multiple species. This octopus is able to copy the physical likeness and movement of more than fifteen different species" Nature keeps amazing.
Imagine the endless opportunities!
You shape small remote controlled submarine to look like something you want it to mimic, and make it attack animals in aquarium. This octopus observes the new badass and takes it's shape when threatened. Marine biologists, if you read this, here are some ideas:
1. small naked woman swimming,
2. Facehugger
3. floating head of Jacques Cousteau (with red cap on),
4. cute kitten,
5. yellow submarine,
6. Mona Lisa (the painting)
7. Trollface.
8. demon.
9. human skull.
"Having studied many octopus species in the wild, I am never surprised by the color and shape change capacities of these animals," said Mark Norman of the Melbourne Museum in Australia. "However, this animal stood out as it was the only one we've encountered that goes beyond camouflage to take on the guise of dangerous animals."
