Cool Close-Up Insect Pictures

Cool pictures of insects close up glistening in the early morning with dew gathering on their sleeping bodies. Photographed in extreme close-up, one moth appears to be totally encrusted in diamonds as it rests on a twig.

Stunning: Droplets of water bead on the head of this blue dragonfly as it slumbers on a leaf

Dragonflies, flies and beetles also take on an unearthly quality as the water droplets form on them. These remarkable photographs were taken by physiotherapist Miroslaw Swietek at around 3am in the forest next to his home. Using a torch, the 37-year-old amateur photographer hunts out the motionless bugs in the darkness before setting up his camera and flash just millimetres from them.

Close up: Amateur photographer Miroslaw Swietek captured this common fly slumbering on top of a plant as the water condenses on its body

Bejewelled: This month looks like it has been encrusted in diamonds as it rests on a twig.

Mr Swietek said: 'I took up photography as a relaxing hobby two and a half years ago and I particularly like taking pictures of insects and lizards. 'I photograph them in their natural environment in the forest next to my village.'They all are covered in dew because I go to the forest in the morning at around 3am. 'At 3am to 4am insects are sleepy and taking photos of them is easy, but it is very difficult to find them.

Close up: The insects appear to be completely drenched in water as they rest while the sun is down

Shower time: Mr Swietek gets up at 3am to capture the insects while they are less active in a forest near his home

'You must be very fast taking the photos because the dew quickly disappears. 'It is very satisfying getting a good shot of an insect which I have had to hunt out. 'I have books which help my identify insects but because they are all covered in dew I find it almost impossible to know which types they are.'

Although insects do not 'sleep' in the same sense as humans, they enter a state of torpor where they are virtually immobile and much less sensitive to external stimuli. Mr Swietek lives with his wife and teenage son in Jaroszow, a village in Poland around 30 miles from the city of Wroclaw.

Clinging on: The amateur photographer searches for the insects using a torch and then sets up his camera and flash right next to them

Hobby: Another dragonfly enjoys an early morning wash. Mr Swietek only took up photography two and a half years ago

Cool HD Earth Pictures

These cool Earth photographs from Nasa are the most detailed views of Earth to date. Using a collection of satellite images, scientists painstakingly stitched together months of observations to create these montages which show the surface of the continents and oceans in stunning detail.

This mesmerising view of Earth is a montage of images taken by the Terra satellite orbiting 435miles above the planet's surface.

India takes centre stage here with the vast continent of Africa curving away to the left. Images were taken every eight days to reveal land surface that might otherwise be obscured by cloud.

Making of World Cup 2010 Adidas Football

Here's the 2010 South Africa world cup football that Adidas claims has surpassed the soccer ball from the 2006 world cup and constructed the roundest and most accurate ball ever played. Here is a picture of the ball and below is a video of how the football is made.

Video of the Making of 2010 World Cup Football:

While Adidas would not provide numerical flight data, it claims that robotic kicking and wind tunnel testing at Loughborough University in England and at its own football lab in Germany show that Jabulani is its most accurate ball. To be sanctioned FIFA Approved, a ball is only subject to a handful of more static tests, which the Jabulani ball obviously meets.

• Circumference: FIFA Standard: 68.5-69.5cm, Jabulani: 69.0 +/- 0.2

• Roundness: Diameter is measured in 16 different locations. FIFA Standard: max 1.5% difference, Jabulani: max 1.0% difference

• Water Absorption: A ball is pressed and rotated in water 250 times: FIFA Standard: max 10% weight increase. Jabulani: 0% weight increase

• Weight: FIFA standard: 420-445 grams, Jabulani: 440 +/- 0.2 grams

• Uniform Rebound: The only dynamic FIFA test, the ball is dropped ten times onto a steel plate from a two meter height. The difference from the lowest to the highest bounce can be no more than 10 cm. Jabulani bounced in a range from 143 to 149 cm

• Loss of Pressure: Air pressure measured three days after inflation. FIFA Standard: 20% max loss, Jabulani: 10% max loss

OK Go 'This Too Shall Pass' - Coolest Music Video!

Super cool music video for OK Go and the song 'This Too Shall Pass'. Directed by James Frost, OK Go and Syyn Labs and p.roduced by Shirley Moyers.  The video was filmed in a two story warehouse, in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. The "machine" was designed and built by the band, along with members of Syyn Labs over the course of several months.Coolest video we have seen in a long time!

The above video reminded us of the Honda car cog video below. The Only CG used was on the car lights and in the middle section of the video where they had to stitch the sequences together because the room wasn't long enough.
