Some of the lesser-known reasons to consider giving up smoking

It is well-known that smoking is harmful not only to yourself, but also to others via the inhalation of second-hand smoke. There has been a lot of research into this topic, with Cancer Research UK suggesting that “smoking causes over a quarter (27 per cent) of cancer deaths in the UK and 3 in 20 cancer cases”.

However, there are many other reasons why you should consider quitting smoking which are not always related to lung cancer. Below is a list of different- and less common- reasons why you should consider giving up smoking…

  1. It increases the likelihood of autoimmune diseases such as lupus

Lupus – or also known by its longer name, systemic lupus erythematosus – is an autoimmune disease which can be directly linked to smoking. Although lupus can cause mild symptoms, in more severe cases, it can be incredibly destructive to the body, causing issues such as inflammation, pain and even tissue damage throughout the body.

However, your chance of contracting a disease such as lupus is directly correlated with how much you smoke. Therefore, cutting down by using e-cigarettes such as Pure E-Liquids can dramatically decrease this likelihood.

  1. Smoking excessively can also give you gangrene

An illness often associated with Henry VIII and the trenches in World War I, gangrene is an illness caused as a result of an insufficient blood supply. Smoking can constrict the blood vessels in the long-term, and therefore restrict the blood flow to certain extremities.

This means that the tissue in these extremities which are suffering with the restricted blood flow will start to slowly decay, resulting in unpleasant smells. Furthermore, sometimes, in very extreme cases, this tissue will have to be amputated.

  1. Smoking excessively can lead to impotence

Much like gangrene detailed above, smoking can restrict the blood flow to certain areas of the body and therefore create impotence in males. In the long-term, this blood flow can be completely cut off to the male genitalia.

Even drugs like Viagra will not work if the impotence is a result of long-term smoking, as the chemical reactions that the body creates because of smoking make many different forms of erectile dysfunction medication useless in combating the problem.

  1. Other forms of cancer, not just lung cancer

As hinted at the beginning of this piece, the risk of lung cancer as a result of smoking is a well-known one. However, the risk of other cancers is also very high when you are a long-term smoker. There are many different types of cancer which smoking can cause – including, but not limited to:

  • Liver cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Lip cancer
  • Mouth cancer
  • Tongue cancer
  • Throat cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Many other types of cancer

This is because smoking cigarettes means ingesting over 7,000 chemicals which are taken in via the lungs but spread to different parts of the body, too. This is why cancer can occur in many different parts of the body, not just the lungs.
