Building Your Art Career: Essential Steps for Emerging Artists

For emerging artists, navigating the contemporary art world can feel overwhelming. Between creating work, building an audience, and finding exhibition opportunities, it’s easy to lose sight of the practical steps that can accelerate your career growth. However, with the right approach and resources, you can establish a strong foundation for long-term success.

    Finding Exhibition Opportunities

One of the most critical aspects of building your art career is gaining visibility through exhibitions and competitions. Many artists struggle to find legitimate opportunities that align with their practice. The key is to stay informed about current openings and deadlines. Regularly checking for a call for entry can help you discover juried shows, gallery exhibitions, and competitions that match your artistic vision. These opportunities not only provide exposure but also help you build a professional portfolio and establish credibility within the art community.

    Articulating Your Vision

Beyond creating compelling artwork, artists must be able to communicate their concepts and intentions effectively. This is where many talented artists fall short. Gallery owners, curators, and collectors want to understand the story behind your work. Learning how to write artist statement is an essential skill that can significantly impact how your work is received. A well-crafted artist statement serves as a bridge between your creative process and your audience, providing context that enhances the viewer’s experience.

    Consistency and Professionalism

Success in the art world rarely happens overnight. It requires consistent effort, professional presentation, and strategic planning. Maintain an updated portfolio, engage with your local art community, and don’t be discouraged by rejection. Every application, every exhibition, and every connection you make contributes to your growth as an artist. Focus on developing your unique voice while staying open to feedback and new opportunities.

Remember, building an art career is a marathon, not a sprint. By actively seeking opportunities, clearly communicating your vision, and maintaining professionalism in all your interactions, you’ll create a sustainable path forward in your artistic journey.

  • What makes Southeast Asia a remote work hotspot

What makes Southeast Asia a remote work hotspot

In recent years, Southeast Asia has rapidly emerged as a global hub for remote work, drawing attention from businesses seeking flexible, efficient, and cost-savvy operational strategies. With digital transformation accelerating and remote work becoming the norm rather than the exception, this region’s combination of talent availability, technological readiness, and competitive economics positions it as an ideal location for building offshore teams.

A Rising Talent Pool with Global Competence

One of Southeast Asia’s greatest strengths lies in its skilled and multilingual workforce. Countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia boast large populations of professionals who are not only proficient in English but also bring strong educational backgrounds and domain-specific expertise.

The Philippines, in particular, stands out for its cultural compatibility with Western markets, a legacy of its historical ties and education system that emphasises English proficiency. Filipino professionals are known for their adaptability, high emotional intelligence, and familiarity with global business practices – qualities that enhance their effectiveness in remote work environments.

Digital Infrastructure and Remote Work Culture

Southeast Asia has made significant strides in improving its digital infrastructure, with widespread access to high-speed internet, co-working spaces, and modern collaboration tools. According to the 2024 Digital Nations Index, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand are ranked among the leading digital nations, reflecting strong performance in areas such as connectivity, infrastructure, and digital adoption, particularly across major urban centres. Meanwhile, Vietnam and Indonesia are noted as top emerging digital nations, showing significant upward momentum.

Moreover, the cultural shift towards remote and hybrid work is already well established. Governments in countries like Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines have invested in policies supporting telecommuting and digital economy development, recognising their role in driving productivity and inclusive growth.

Time Zone Alignment and Operational Flexibility

A key operational advantage of outsourcing to Southeast Asia is the favourable time zone alignment with major global markets. Businesses in Australia, the UK, and even parts of North America benefit from having teams that can work in parallel or in extended shifts, effectively enabling 24/7 business operations.

This “follow-the-sun” model boosts productivity, particularly in customer service, IT support, and back-office functions, where continuous coverage is critical.

    Economic Viability and Scalable Solutions

For companies navigating post-pandemic financial constraints and ongoing economic uncertainty, cost efficiency is a primary driver. Southeast Asia delivers substantial savings without compromising on quality. Labour costs in this region are significantly lower than in Western markets, yet the output often meets or exceeds expectations.

In this context, many businesses seeking operational efficiency have turned to cost-effective remote staffing from the Philippines, Vietnam, or India—countries known for their strong talent pools, lower labour costs, and growing digital infrastructure. These options allow companies to scale their operations quickly without incurring the overheads typically associated with hiring in-house teams.

    Business Continuity and Risk Diversification

Geographic diversification is another strategic benefit. Building teams in Southeast Asia allows companies to mitigate geopolitical and operational risks, especially in light of supply chain disruptions and localised market instability elsewhere. Countries in the region have shown resilience, with rapid recovery rates and stable business environments conducive to long-term partnerships.

Additionally, many service providers offer robust business continuity planning (BCP) protocols, including disaster recovery setups and cybersecurity frameworks, ensuring seamless operations even in times of disruption.

    Sustainable and Ethical Outsourcing Practices

Modern businesses are also increasingly concerned with sustainability and ethical labour practices. Many Southeast Asian outsourcing providers are now certified by international standards such as ISO and GDPR compliance, and actively invest in employee welfare, upskilling, and workplace inclusivity. These practices not only enhance reputation but also contribute to workforce retention and service quality.

    Tapping Southeast Asia’s Remote Potential

Southeast Asia’s unique blend of human capital, digital readiness, time zone advantages, and economic value makes it a compelling destination for remote team expansion. As global businesses continue to reimagine their workforce strategies, tapping into this region’s capabilities offers both immediate gains and long-term growth opportunities, solidifying its place as a remote work hotspot for the future.

  • Why Carpet Tiles Are a Smart Choice for High-Traffic Commercial Areas

Why Carpet Tiles Are a Smart Choice for High-Traffic Commercial Areas

Let’s face it, commercial spaces can be chaotic. From bustling offices to crowded shopping centres, there’s one thing that ties them all together: high foot traffic. The flooring in these spaces takes a serious beating every single day, and making the right choice for your floor covering is crucial.

Whether you’re refurbishing an office, retail store, or any other commercial area, carpet tiles are an absolute winner. Let me tell you why.

Durability – Built to Handle the Hustle

Carpet tiles are specifically designed for high-traffic environments. Unlike traditional broadloom carpets that can wear down and look tired fast, carpet tiles are made to last. They are constructed from high-quality, durable fibres that resist crushing and matting. Think about it: they endure hundreds, if not thousands, of footsteps daily, and yet, they still maintain their appearance.

Plus, the backing on carpet tiles is usually tougher than what you’d find on regular carpet. This means better resistance to wear and tear from constant use. High-traffic areas like lobbies, corridors, and open-plan offices can really put flooring to the test, but carpet tiles stand up to the challenge.

Easy Maintenance – No Fuss, No Stress

In a busy commercial setting, spills and stains are inevitable. This is where carpet tiles shine. The beauty of carpet tiles is that if one section gets damaged or stained beyond cleaning, you don’t need to rip out the entire carpet. You simply replace the individual tile. It’s cost-effective, practical, and reduces downtime!

Plus, regular maintenance is a breeze. Vacuuming and spot cleaning are typically all that’s needed to keep them looking fresh. The modular design also allows you to rotate tiles in high-traffic areas to ensure even wear. So, not only do you save time and money on upkeep, but you extend the lifespan of your flooring too.

Design Flexibility – Make a Statement

Carpet tiles offer a level of creative freedom that traditional carpets can’t match. Available in a huge range of colours, patterns, and textures, carpet tiles allow you to design your space exactly the way you want. You can mix and match tiles to create unique patterns or designate different zones within your space using contrasting colours.

    A Few Creative Ideas:

    • Subtle Borders – Use a darker colour around the perimeter of your space to create a polished, finished look.
    • Custom Patterns Combine different tiles to create geometric designs, checkerboards, or even custom logos!
    • Zoning – Use different tile colours or patterns to visually separate different areas, such as reception spaces or workstations, without the need for walls.

    Installation – Quick and Convenient

Installing traditional carpets in a commercial setting can be a time-consuming, labour-intensive task. Carpet tiles, on the other hand, are much easier to handle. They can be installed without the need for adhesive, thanks to their backing, which holds them securely in place.

Even better, they can be installed over a variety of subfloors, including concrete and existing flooring. The installation process generates less waste, too, as you can order just the right number of tiles for your space, and there’s minimal cutting required. If you ever need to replace a section, it’s as simple as lifting out the damaged tiles and slotting new ones in – all without disrupting your entire operation.

Sustainability – A Step Toward Greener Choices

Now more than ever, businesses are considering the environmental impact of their choices, and flooring is no exception. Carpet tiles can be an eco-friendly option. A lot of manufacturers offer products made from recycled materials. Additionally, because you only replace individual tiles when they wear out, there’s less overall waste compared to ripping up and replacing an entire carpet.

Some carpet tiles are even designed to be fully recyclable at the end of their life cycle, helping to reduce the amount of material ending up in landfills.

Noise Reduction – A Quieter Space, Please

High-traffic commercial areas are often noisy places, with sounds bouncing off walls, ceilings, and hard floors. Carpet tiles offer a simple solution to reduce noise levels. The fibres in carpet tiles help absorb sound, which can make a massive difference in a busy environment.

Whether it’s the clatter of office chairs, the chatter of customers, or the endless clomp of shoes, carpet tiles help create a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere. This is particularly beneficial in office settings, where concentration is key, or in retail spaces, where a pleasant shopping experience can lead to happier customers.

Conclusion – The Smart Choice for Commercial Spaces

When it comes to flooring for high-traffic commercial areas, carpet tiles tick all the boxes. They’re durable, easy to maintain, and offer limitless design possibilities. Plus, they’re straightforward to install and environmentally friendly.

  • How Auto Enrolment for Pensions Works in Ireland: A Detailed Guide

How Auto Enrolment for Pensions Works in Ireland: A Detailed Guide

Planning for retirement is a critical aspect of financial stability, yet many individuals often overlook or delay it. To address this issue and enhance the financial security of retirees, Ireland is introducing an auto enrolment pension scheme. By understanding the question ”how does auto enrolment work” people can better understand how pension contributions are easily deducted from their salaries as part of Ireland’s changing pension system.

    Understanding Auto Enrolment

Auto enrolment is a system where employees are automatically enrolled into a pension scheme by their employers. The primary goal is to increase pension participation rates and ensure that more people have sufficient retirement savings. This system is designed to be straightforward and inclusive, making it easier for individuals to start saving for their future without needing to take the initial step themselves.

    Why Auto Enrolment?

Several key factors underscore the need for auto enrolment in Ireland:

    1. Low Pension Coverage: Despite the availability of private pensions, a significant portion of the workforce does not participate in any pension scheme, relying solely on the State Pension.
    2. Aging Population: With an aging population, the financial burden on the state to support retirees is increasing. Auto enrolment helps distribute this responsibility.
    3. Financial Security: Ensuring that more people have adequate savings for retirement contributes to overall economic stability and individual financial security.

How Does Auto Enrolment Work in Ireland?

The auto enrolment scheme in Ireland is designed to be simple and beneficial for both employees and employers. Here’s a detailed breakdown of how the system is expected to function:

    1. Automatic Enrolment

    • Eligibility: Employees aged between 23 and 60 who earn over a certain threshold (expected to be around €20,000 per year) will be automatically enrolled into a pension scheme.
    • Opt-out Option: Employees have the option to opt-out of the scheme after a mandatory enrolment period, typically a few months. If they opt out, they can rejoin at a later date but will be automatically re-enrolled periodically.

    2. Contributions

    • Employee Contributions: Employees will contribute a percentage of their salary to their pension fund. This percentage will start low and gradually increase over a period of years to make the transition smoother.
    • Employer Contributions: Employers are required to match the employee’s contributions up to a certain percentage, effectively doubling the amount saved.
    • State Contributions: The government will also provide tax relief or additional contributions to further incentivize saving.

    3. Pension Providers

    • Choice of Providers: Employees will have a choice of pension providers selected through a competitive process to ensure low fees and good returns.
    • Default Option: For those who do not wish to choose a provider, a default option will be available, ensuring that everyone is covered without needing to make an active choice.

    4. Portability

    • Retirement Accounts: Pension savings will be held in individual retirement accounts, which are portable. This means that employees can change jobs without losing their pension savings or needing to start over.
    • Consistency: Contributions will continue seamlessly as employees move between jobs, ensuring continuous growth of their retirement funds.

    Benefits of Auto Enrolment

The auto enrolment system offers numerous benefits:

    1. Increased Savings: By making pension contributions automatic, more individuals will save for retirement, leading to increased financial security.
    2. Employer Participation: Employer contributions enhance the value of the pension fund, making it a more attractive benefit for employees.
    3. Government Support: Additional state contributions or tax relief make the scheme even more beneficial for employees.
    4. Ease of Use: The automatic nature of the system reduces the complexity and effort required to start saving for retirement.

    Potential Challenges

While auto enrolment is designed to be beneficial, there are potential challenges to be aware of:

    1. Opt-out Rates: If a significant number of employees opt out, the effectiveness of the scheme could be reduced.
    2. Administrative Burden: Employers will need to manage the administrative aspects of enrolling employees and making contributions, which could increase their workload.
    3. Awareness and Education: Ensuring that employees understand the benefits and mechanics of the scheme is crucial to its success.

    Preparing for Auto Enrolment

As Ireland moves towards implementing auto enrolment, here are some steps employees and employers can take to prepare:

    • Stay Informed: Keep up to date with the latest developments and timelines related to the auto enrolment scheme.
    • Financial Planning: Employees should start considering their retirement goals and how auto enrolment can help achieve them.
    • Employer Readiness: Employers should begin preparing their payroll systems and administrative processes to handle the new requirements.

    Conclusion

Auto enrolment is a significant step forward in ensuring that more people in Ireland are financially prepared for retirement. By understanding how auto enrolment works and the benefits it offers, employees can better appreciate the importance of participating in a pension scheme. Employers, on the other hand, play a critical role in facilitating this process and supporting their workforce in securing a stable financial future. As Ireland transitions to this new system, the collective efforts of employees, employers, and the government will help create a more financially secure society.

  • How to Help Your Au Pair Adjust to a New Culture

How to Help Your Au Pair Adjust to a New Culture

An au pair is a young person typically between the ages of 18 and 30 who travels to a foreign country to live with a host family and provide childcare in exchange for room, board, and a stipend. This arrangement allows the au pair to immerse themselves in a new culture, improve their language skills, and gain international experience while helping the host family with their childcare needs.

The term “au pair” originates from the French phrase “au pair,” meaning “on par” or “equal to,” reflecting the idea that the au pair is considered a temporary family member rather than a traditional employee. The duties of an au pair often include tasks such as preparing meals for the children, helping with homework, playing with them, and assisting with their daily routines. In return, the au pair receives a private room, meals, and a weekly or monthly allowance.

Being an au pair can be a mutually beneficial arrangement. For the host family, it offers affordable and flexible childcare, while the au pair gains valuable life experiences and the opportunity to travel. Regulations governing au pair programs vary by country, often including requirements for working hours, educational opportunities, and legal protections for both parties involved.

Welcoming an au pair into your home via reputable agencies like goaupair.com is a unique experience that blends cultural exchange with practical help. While it’s an exciting opportunity for your family, it can be an equally daunting challenge for the au pair, who is navigating new surroundings, customs, and responsibilities all at once.

So, how can you ensure that this journey is as enriching and smooth as possible? Here’s your guide to helping your au pair adjust to a new culture, making the experience memorable and rewarding for everyone involved.

    The Adventure of Cultural Adjustment

Imagine landing in a country where everything is new – the language, the food, the daily routines. That’s what your au pair is experiencing. This adjustment period, often filled with excitement and challenges, is known as “culture shock.” Understanding this phase is crucial to providing the right support.

    1. Language Hurdles: Breaking the Ice

The language barrier can be one of the most intimidating aspects of adjusting to a new culture. Even if your au pair has some proficiency in the local language, the nuances, slang, and speed of everyday conversation can be overwhelming.

    1. Encourage Practice – Make language learning a fun and integral part of daily life. Play language games, label household items, and have regular conversations. This not only helps your au pair improve but also builds confidence.
    2. Be Patient – Encourage your au pair to ask questions and never hesitate to repeat or explain words. A little patience goes a long way in easing communication frustrations.

    2. Navigating Social Norms and Customs

Every culture has its unwritten rules—from dining etiquette to social greetings. For an au pair, learning these can feel like decoding a complex puzzle.

    1. Provide a Crash Course – Before your au pair arrives, consider sharing a guide on local customs and common phrases. This can include everything from how to greet people to tipping practices.
    2. Lead by Example – Demonstrating these norms in everyday situations is one of the best ways to teach. Whether it’s how to politely decline an invitation or the right way to address elders, your actions will serve as a helpful reference.

    3. Understanding Family Dynamics and Expectations

Your home may have its own set of routines and expectations, which can be vastly different from what your au pair is used to.

    1. Clear Communication – Discuss household rules and routines as soon as your au pair arrives. Clarify expectations around duties, curfews, and household chores.
    2. Flexibility and Open Dialogue – Be open to adjustments and encourage your au pair to express their feelings about their workload and responsibilities. A flexible approach can prevent misunderstandings and foster a more harmonious living arrangement.

    Creating a Supportive Environment

Beyond the basics of daily life, it’s essential to create an environment where your au pair feels welcomed and supported. This means going beyond mere accommodation to foster a sense of belonging.

    1. Inclusive Family Activities

Involve your au pair in family traditions and activities. Whether it’s a weekend outing, movie night, or a family game, these moments are crucial for bonding and helping them feel like a part of the family.

    1. Celebrate Together – Acknowledge your au pair’s cultural holidays and traditions. This not only shows respect but also allows for a rich cultural exchange.
    2. Share Stories and Experiences – Encourage sharing of cultural stories and experiences. This mutual exchange can be enlightening and foster deeper connections.

    2. Encouraging Social Connections

Feeling isolated is a common challenge for many au pairs. Encouraging them to build a social network can greatly enhance their experience.

    1. Connect with Other Au Pairs – Introduce them to local au pair groups or community events. These connections provide a support system and a chance to share experiences with others who are in the same situation.
    2. Explore the Community – Encourage exploration of local attractions, clubs, or classes. This can help your au pair integrate more fully into the community and enjoy their time abroad.

    Overcoming Challenges Together

Even with the best preparations, challenges will arise. How you address these moments can define the experience for both you and your au pair.

    Handling Misunderstandings

Cultural misunderstandings are almost inevitable but can be handled gracefully.

    • Open Dialogue – Address misunderstandings promptly and openly. Avoid placing blame and instead focus on finding solutions together.
    • Cultural Sensitivity – Be sensitive to the cultural background of your au pair. What might seem like a small issue to you could be significant for them.

    Supporting Emotional Well-being

Living away from home can be tough, and homesickness is a common issue. Be supportive and understanding.

    • Encourage Communication with Family – Encourage regular communication with their family back home. This connection can be a crucial emotional anchor.
    • Be a Supportive Listener – Sometimes, just being there to listen and offer support can make all the difference.

    A Journey Worth Taking

Bringing an au pair into your home is not just about finding childcare—it’s about embracing a cultural exchange that can enrich your family in unexpected ways. By being supportive, communicative, and open-minded, you can help your au pair navigate the challenges of adjusting to a new culture and create a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.

In the end, it’s not just about helping your au pair adapt—it’s about your family growing and learning together. Embrace this opportunity for cultural exchange with open arms, and you’ll find that the rewards are as valuable as they are unexpected.

  • Drink Up: Keep Your Colleagues (And Yourself!) Hydrated This Summer

Drink Up: Keep Your Colleagues (And Yourself!) Hydrated This Summer

With Summer now in full swing and temperatures on the rise, many will be looking for ways to keep cool whilst at work. Naturally, this task will be easier for some (remote workers have the undeniable advantage of reduced pressure to remain fully-clothed whilst working), but it’s the time of year where it’s important for business owners, entrepreneurs, team leaders, and HR managers to be conscious of reminding their staff to stay hydrated.

Dehydration can significantly impact productivity, health, and overall well-being. Presented by commercial heat pump manufacturer, Clade Engineering, this explores the importance of hydration and provides practical strategies to keep your workforce well-hydrated and comfortably cool.

    Understanding Dehydration

Dehydration happens when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, which disrupts normal bodily functions and affects everything from muscle function to brain performance. As you can imagine, this makes it harder for us to focus and work effectively and, if left unchecked, can lead to serious health problems, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially during heatwaves.

Common causes of dehydration include inadequate water intake, excessive sweating, and illnesses that cause the loss of bodily fluids.

    Signs and Symptoms

It’s important to recognise the early signs of dehydration, which include thirst, dry mouth, and a decreased need to use the bathroom. As it progresses, symptoms can become more severe, such as dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, and fainting. It’s important for team leaders and HR managers to recognise these signs in staff members, and encourage everyone to stay hydrated.

How does Hydration affect the body and mind?

Hydration directly impacts our brain function and, by extension, our ability to be productive. The brain, composed of about 75% water, relies heavily on adequate hydration to function at its best. A lack of hydration can lead to reduced concentration, memory lapses, and decreased problem-solving abilities, resulting in a decrease in productivity and an increase in errors.

Physical symptoms of dehydration include muscle fatigue, cramps, headaches, and overall weakness, which can significantly impact those of us in physically demanding roles. Of course, those working in less physically demanding roles may also experience general discomfort that affects their performance.

Dehydration can also negatively impact mood and morale, leading to irritability and increased stress levels – two things best avoided in high-pressure work environments. A well-hydrated workforce is generally happier and more harmonious, fostering better teamwork and collaboration.

    Daily Water Intake Recommendations

When it comes to drinking water, health experts generally recommend a daily intake of 2.5 litres for men and 2 litres for women. However, these guidelines can vary based on individual needs, climate, and activity levels. Employees engaging in strenuous activities or working in hot environments may need more than the recommended amounts.

    Strategies for the Workplace

    1. Promote Regular Water Breaks: Encourage employees to take short breaks to drink water. Consider setting up hydration stations with water dispensers and reusable cups.

    2. Provide Reusable Water Bottles: Distribute branded water bottles to staff and encourage them to keep them filled throughout the day.

    3. Use Technology: Hydration reminder apps and smart bottles can help track water intake and remind employees to drink regularly.

    4. Incorporate Water-Rich Foods: Offer fruits and vegetables like strawberries, cucumbers, and watermelons in the office kitchen to boost hydration.

    5. Adjust Hydration for Weather Conditions: On hot days, remind employees to drink more frequently. During colder months, ensure they understand that indoor heating can also lead to dehydration

    Strategies for Remote Workers

For remote employees, staying hydrated can be more challenging without the structure of an office environment. Here are some tips:

    1. Encourage a Home Hydration Routine: Remind remote workers to start their day with a glass of water and to keep a water bottle at their desk.

    2. Virtual Hydration Reminders: Use team communication tools to send regular hydration reminders and tips.

    3. Hydration Challenges: Organise friendly competitions to motivate remote workers to meet daily hydration goals.

    Alternatives to Water

While water is the best option for hydration, other drinks like herbal teas, fruit juices, and electrolyte solutions can also help. Be cautious with caffeinated and sugary drinks, as they can have diuretic effects. Electrolyte drinks can be particularly useful for replenishing essential minerals lost through sweat, especially during intense physical activity.

    Use Tools and Apps

Hydration trackers and smart bottles can be valuable tools for maintaining good hydration habits. These devices remind employees to drink water and track their intake throughout the day

    Special Considerations for Vulnerable Individuals

Older adults and young children are more susceptible to dehydration. Ensure these groups have easy access to fluids and are encouraged to drink regularly. For older employees, set up hydration reminders or check-ins. For those with children, share tips on keeping kids hydrated.

    Keep Your Staff Hydrated

During these hot summer months, creating a hydration-friendly environment is key. By recognizing the signs of dehydration, understanding the factors contributing to it, and adopting effective hydration strategies, you can help prevent dehydration-related health issues. Employers can provide accessible water sources, encourage regular water breaks, and integrate hydration into wellness programs, while those in leadership should set the tone by prioritising their own hydration and encouraging others to do the same.

    Stay safe, stay hydrated!

  • What Will A School Leaver Today’s Career Look Like

What Will A School Leaver Today’s Career Look Like

A school leaver today may very much wonder what their career path might end up looking like. In their parents and grand-parents day it would have been a very different employment landscape to what the young school leaver will find. Let’s have a quick look at some of the key changes and differences between today’s and previous generations young people.

Job For Life Unlikely (& Possibly Undesirable)

The one major change is the all but disappearance of the ‘job for life’ with such a changeable job market and indeed some of the changes in types of industries we will touch on later in this article. It’s important that the job seeker of the future becomes fully equipped for self-promotion and becomes adapt at marketing themselves as they will be in need of at least a few lines of work throughout their working lives.

    Change In Industries

It’s not uncommon for people these days to not only work for a variety of different employers in their career but even to change industries all together. It is not uncommon for re-training to occur and even going back to college or university as a mature student to study for the first time or pursue extra qualifications or a post-graduate degree.

    Portfolio Careers

Many young people have several occupations at once, doing a mixture of employment, self-employment and freelance work, often referred to as the ‘gig economy’. Working in this manner can give a sense of freedom and variety but is also a little more uncertain and tasks such as tax returns and trying to obtain a mortgage can be a little tricky, but if you search online there are always lenders for every situation, so it really works for some but might not be the best long-term answer for everyone. If they are to be working in this manner then individuals will be able to point to a variety of experience and skills on their CV.

    Automation & New Industries

The fact that automation is becoming more and more common is changing the job landscape forever and in dramatic ways. From factory work to customer services there are many industries are employing a fraction of the real human employees that they used to but on the other hand many other industries are on the rise and there will be many jobs of the future in areas such as IT and related industries so with a bit of future planning there will be plenty opportunities for the school leaver of today.

Gender Balance & Family Life Different From Previous Generations

There are a lot of changes in the gender balance in the work-place in recent generations as it’s more common for women to be in the workplace but still there is a lot of work to be done addressing the gender pay gap. This also has an effect on the family dynamic and with it often being the case that both parents work (one at least part time) then it’s more common for there to be more shared parenting duties or the use of child-minders and out of school clubs, in fact it’s more common for one of the couple to work from home even in areas such as programming and coding which is going to be a trend that continues.
