Savvy spenders are turning their attention away from traditional investment opportunities and focusing on alternative investment opportunities such as classic cars, or more specifically ‘future classics’. The kinds of cars that can be picked up for next to nothing now, though are pretty much guaranteed to be worth a hell of a lot more in the years and decades to come as long as you choose wisely by making the right precautions. If you’re looking for a little inspiration, just about any of the following sports cars should set you up for something pretty special going forwards…
TVR Chimaera
First up, the best-selling TVR of all time is also undoubtedly the best. There’s something intoxicating about the pleasure-fear combo of driving one of these things that’s totally timeless. Not to mention extinct – hence its guaranteed long-term appeal.

Porsche 928
As far as the experts are concerned, pick up a solid version of the 928 for £10k and there’s a good chance you’ll be selling it for £25k in five years or so. Hardly any further justification needed.

Mazda MX5
Still my favourite car I’ve ever owned, making money from a good MX5 isn’t tricky, given that used versions sell for as little as £1,000 and up. Buy cheap, get it back in good condition, wait a while and cash in.

Porsche Boxster Spyder
Unbelievable that for no more than about £10k these days, you can own your very own Porsche…and a convertible Porsche at that! Sooner or later, the now-cheap Boxster is guaranteed to be a classic and sell for so much more than this.

BMW Z4M coupé
The biggest pull of the Z4M coupe is that fact that only 200 of them ever found their way onto UK soil. Which makes it a hugely appealing collector’s item in its own right – the fact that it’s an awesome car is just an added bonus!

Audi TT RS
Some TT’s are on the marker right now for the kinds of prices that almost defy believe. As such, the savvy shopper with an eye for a bargain could use the TT as a guaranteed money-maker over the years to come.

Mazda RX8
As for the RX8, the rotary engine split the public right down the middle – delighting half and confusing the living daylights out of the rest. In any case, the car was, is and always will be a truly delightful and impressive oddity. One that’s going to be worth a pretty penny soon enough.

Honda S 2000
Winner of countless prestigious awards and no less than a beast in its own right, it’s a shame the plug had to be pulled on the S 2000. But it did, which is why this simply spectacular driving machine always has been and always will be in massive demand.

Ford Capri
First revered by the masses, then ridiculed, now on its way to legendary status once again. Pick a Capri up for pennies (while you still can!) and it’s almost impossible not to make a pretty penny on it as a future classic. In the past couple of years alone, the average price of a Capri has doubled!

Lotus Elise/Exige
Last up, there’s barely anything on the market today at any price that offers anything close to the raw, untainted driving experience of the Lotus Elise/Exige. Even with its rumoured shoddy build quality and frequent breakdown issues, what it offers in return for your occasional patience is something truly spectacular. A true one (or two) of a kind.
