3 Tips For Living The Southern California Lifestyle

Southern California is one of the most beautiful places in the world and as such is one of the most sought after places to live. This region is famed for its sunny weather and dramatic Pacific coastline. San Diego, just north of the Mexican border, is known for surfing spots and massive Balboa Park, with its world-renowned zoo and museums. Across the bay lies resort city Coronado. Up the coast is Los Angeles, home to Hollywood studios, fine art in the Getty Center, Griffith Park and the high-end shops of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

Of course, with its popularity comes its challenges. Many places in the area are expensive to live in, the temperatures in the summers get too high to be tolerable for some people, and traffic can be terrible! If you choose to live in Southern California, there are a few things you should know that can help you live the Southern California lifestyle more effortlessly. Here are 3 tips to do that.

Learn About The Ecosystem

Depending on where you lived before moving to Southern California, the ecosystem is likely very different from whatever you’re used to. The plants and animals of the area are especially interesting because though it may not look like it in certain parts, it is really just one giant desert. Don’t be surprised to see coyotes, lizards, bats, rabbits, or even the occasional rattlesnake.

It is also smart to learn about the plants that grow here, both native and non. If you’re planning on removing palm trees in your yard, hire a professional and take extra care. Palms, especially larger ones, can be very old and might be able to be salvaged and moved somewhere else if you do it properly.

Invest In An Air Conditioner

Whether you live in an apartment or home, no matter where you are located in Southern California you will likely get great use out of an air conditioner. Summers can be unbearably hot, reaching temperatures in the triple digits on a regular basis. Be prepared by purchasing an air conditioner and some fans before the first major heat wave of the year, because every time the temperatures start to rise stores start to sell out quickly!

Get Used To Traffic

Because it’s such a nice place to live, Southern California is very overpopulated in many parts and therefore the traffic situation can be pretty horrific. Prepare to spend hours in traffic on your morning and evening commutes, or pretty much anytime you try to leave the city limits to go out of town.

Load up some podcasts you like and your favourite playlists, and give yourself plenty of time so that you don’t have to stress about being late. Try using a gps map app on your phone to give you an estimate of how long you might spend in traffic any given day. It’s also probably a good idea to have air conditioning in your car.

Just like with any other region, Southern California has its quirks and it may not be for everyone. But if you can see past the few negative qualities you may find, you will discover a lot to love! Be prepared ahead of time with the tips above to make your transition even easier.
