Moving to a new house is undoubtedly one of life’s most stressful events. But the good news is that with early preparation, a clear plan, and the right support, it can become a smooth, meaningful transition into an exciting new life chapter. Here’s how to organise your house move so the big day goes off without a hitch – and you can settle into your new place with confidence.
Plan ahead with a moving checklist
Don’t wait until the day is upon you. Begin preparing a detailed checklist as early as possible – six to eight weeks beforehand is a good timeline. On your list, include notifying utility and other service providers such as broadband companies, redirecting or holding post, and researching removal services. Start packing non-essentials such as seasonal clothing first to get them out of the way (and so you can store them for a while on the other side). Remember to label boxes by room to simplify unpacking and include a full list of box contents. And don’t forget to assess storage storage in your new home by taking careful measurements beforehand.
Lighten the load by decluttering before you pack
Moving house is a great opportunity to pare back your belongings before packing. Do you really need to take along multiple versions of the same kitchen utensil? Or those old clothes that you’ve grown out of? Donate, sell or recycle anything you no longer use – you’ll not only save space, but you might end up needing a smaller, cheaper moving van or fewer trips back and forth.
Pick the best movers for your needs
Not all removal services are created equal. It’s worth setting aside some time to compare quotes, check online reviews, and confirm that insurance is included. Will you need a full-service mover who will provide all the boxes and do all the packing and unpacking? Or will a man-with-a-van be enough? It will depend entirely on your budget and how much you own.
Moving day and first-week essentials
You will still need everyday items on moving day. The day before, create a box with essentials such as device chargers, basic toiletries, a kettle, snacks, any necessary medication, and a few plates and cutlery. On the day, take final meter readings (along with photos of the meters showing the numbers), keep keys safe, and do a last walk-through.
In the first week, update your address with your old GP and register with a new one, inform banks, financial institutions and the DVLA (they will need to send a new driver’s licence) of your new address. And don’t forget to check your council tax band to make sure that your monthly bill is correct.
A new home, a fresh start
With the right preparation and mindset, moving doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start early, stay organised, and look forward to settling into your new home.
