    This figure remains quite shocking, but it has decreased by a large amount since 2008.

    This could show that motorbikes are being made to be safer for the user, and it could show that bike tests such as CBTs are becoming more thorough. Having proper training and tests can help a new rider to understand their relation to the road better and leaves less room for mistakes that could be detrimental.

    What are the most common causes for accidents?

    One of the most common reasons for a motorcyclist to be involved in an accident is the failure to negotiate bends. This is where bikers will attempt to overtake each other at a bend in the road and be met with oncoming traffic. This could be due to approaching the bend too quickly or misjudging the bend.

    Poor road conditions are another common factor.     In most cases, you’ll probably only need to use the snow foam on the bottom half of your car where it is dirtiest and most of the dirt, tar and grit will be found – it’s also the part of the car that is the most difficult to remove dirt from. The Nextbase 522GW is a modular dash camera that is one main front camera unit that has the ability to morph into a taxi dash cam by plugging in an interior facing camera to the side of the 522GW. It also has the ability to connect a rear facing camera to cover the back view of your car, pretty cool!

    It records in 1440p HD at 30 fps and has a 140 degree viewing angle. This camera has a 3” touch enabled display screen, a built-in WiFi connection and a companion app. Instead of needing an additional GPS antenna like usual, this camera has one built into it. It also has a lot of new features that are exclusive to Nextbase cameras. For example, it has an Emergency SOS feature to alert authorities if the driver becomes unresponsive due to an accident. The phone will send a GPS location to emergency services through bluetooth. While this phone has the Emergency SOS feature, you need a subscription to use it. You get a 1 year subscription to the companion app through the purchase of a new camera, but you need to pay for each year after that. The GPS itself is called a 10x GPS, which means that it refreshes at 10HZ, which results in accurate and smooth data. It also has a hot start feature that saves maps that it’s already loaded for up to two hours, which saves loading time if you’re only out for a short time.

    This camera also uses bluetooth auto sync to automatically connect your phone to the car when you’re close by. The camera makes two versions of each clip: a low quality one to view straight away and a high quality one to download and view using the built in WiFi connection. It also comes with an interesting mount to make a truly wireless camera. The Click&Go PRO mount has magnets on it so you can just attach the camera to the magnets without using adhesive. This makes the camera a lot more secure and isn’t as likely to fall off as much as a suction cup mount, which can be finicky in higher temperatures. The power cord attaches to the mount instead of the camera which makes it easier to set up in an inconspicuous manner. The mount itself attaches with adhesive or a suction cup, whichever works better for you.

    One thing that is exclusive to the 522GW in particular is a free polarising lens that comes with the camera to remove windshield glare that ruins video quality. The lens is rotatable, so you can move it around based on the angle. This lens is a separate purchase with any of the older cameras so it is nice to see it come for free on the new model. If you do have any of the other models, however, this lens still works on them. The newer Nextbase models also have a touchscreen instead of physical buttons, which allows for the menu options to be larger and for you to edit videos directly on the camera before sharing them.

    Built-In WiFi

    The WiFi hotspot and companion app are pretty standard. The app does have a live view that can help you position your camera correctly to get the best angle, but that’s pretty much it. The best thing that the WiFi hotspot does is connect to Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant. This feature was initially introduced in the previous model but it has since been refined with the 522GW. This feature can be used even if you don’t have Amazon Prime. This feature is great for doing smartphone related tasks while driving. You can play music, make phone calls, get directions, check the weather, and control smart home devices hands-free. All you need is to install the Alexa app on your mobile device. Overall, this system seems to work well, but there have been some issues reported about connecting to the camera’s Alexa, especially with connecting with Spotify.

     

     

    Voice Control with Alexa

    While the initial Alexa compatibility launch was impressive, ultimately you could do the same thing on your smartphone as you could with the camera, and since you need the Alexa app anyway it was somewhat pointless. The recent launch of Alexa Skills made Alexa respond to commands specific to the dash camera. Now you can use Alexa to start/stop recording, protect a file, and modify other camera settings without touching the camera itself. This feature definitely makes the camera unique and convenient.

    Interior Facing Uber Camera

    It’s important to note that this camera has two options for add-on cameras, but these are additional accessories that you have to purchase separately. There is an interior facing camera and a rear camera for the back window. The interior facing camera itself is compatible with a few generations prior as well (compatible with 322GW, 422GW, and 522GW models) so if you don’t feel like upgrading yet you can still purchase the rear camera. Instead of a normal rear facing camera that you attach to the back of your car, the Uber or rideshare camera attaches to the side of the main front facing camera, making it modular, to provide an internal view while the camera is in the car so you end up using less wires to connect the system. This is perfect for drivers who do a lot of ridesharing on APPS like Lyft and Uber so you can supervise who is in the car with you. Just like with the rear camera, this camera also plugs into the front facing camera so you don’t have to use any wires to set it up. Unfortunately the Nextbase camera only has one USB slot so you can’t use the cabin camera and rear view camera simultaneously, so if you want to use the cabin and rear camera you need the wired rear camera to plug into a different spot.

    Dual Dash Cam with Rear Camera

    While there is one camera that attaches to the front facing camera to make it a “taxi dash cam” or an Uber/Lyft dash cam, there is another camera that attaches to the rear view window and gives you a view of the road directly behind your vehicle. This is more of a traditional rear camera that is part of a typical dual dash camera. If you want the traditional dual dash camera experience with the Nextbase 522GW, then this would be the camera to go for. It’s similar to other rearview cameras in that it has a 140 degree lens to capture to road behind you as well as the surrounding lanes. It has a unique tennis ball shape so it’s fairly large for a rear camera but it still fits neatly on the corner or centre of your back window.

    Summary of the 522GW from Nextbase

    Overall, this camera is a solid mid-tier camera. The video quality is excellent and it’s surprising to see a middle of the road camera that has so many innovative features like Alexa and so many add-ons. That said, there have been many issues with the new features. Many have reported that the new features haven’t worked well, especially when adding another video feed by way of a second camera. Some have had the camera freeze, crash, or stop recording when having an additional camera attached to it. Either way, there have been consistent reports of good video quality so it does what it’s supposed to do. If you’re looking for a camera that is a little bit better quality than average and has a few new features to play around with, then the Nextbase 522GW is a pretty good fit.

    What’s the difference between a “modified car” and a “kit car”?

    Like a piece of clothing or a smartphone, a car might not quite feel like genuinely yours until it has received a few… tweaks. That’s where the appeal of modifying a car can become obvious. Much like your handset could benefit from its own case or a replacement battery, your motor could be given anything from a shiny new window sticker to a larger, more powerful engine.

    These days, it’s delightfully easy to modify your car… or, perhaps we should say, “pimp your ride”. Even the Red Bull website outlines a few easy ways you can do it. The myriad of options has undoubtedly fuelled the car-modifying scene’s continued popularity.

    However, in researching those options, you might have occasionally come across the term “kit car”. Don’t be fooled; the terms “modified car” and “kit car” aren’t interchangeable. They do, however, refer to similar things, which is why it would be helpful if you were enlightened as to the differences.

     

    Firstly, what’s a “modified car”?

    In the automotive world, this term is now used so casually that you may have come to deem it largely self-explanatory. Indeed, in many ways, it is. However, the picture isn’t quite so clear-cut when you ask insurers, who tend to follow one of two distinct definitions.

    Mercifully, those differences are explained in an Auto Express article. Some insurers deem a vehicle modified “if it has been changed in any way since it was first supplied by the vehicle manufacturer”. Therefore, if your vehicle hasn’t, you’re off the hook for mod-related hikes in your premiums.

    However, the other definition cited by the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) is a car that has received “any alteration to the manufacturers’ standard specification… including optional extras fitted to the car when new by the vehicle manufacturer or dealer, which improve its value, performance, appearance or attractiveness to thieves.”

     

    Examples of car modifications

    You could be surprised by how strict certain insurers can be when it comes to what they define as a car modification. One report by The Guardian refers to an alternative way of categorising car mods: as “power-related” or “cosmetic”.

    The former refers to changes you had probably already classed as modifications, such as making the engine larger or securing alloy wheels into place. Conversely, it’s not always clear what counts as a “cosmetic” mod, though it can be something as simple as a sticker or slogan.

    If you are unsure whether your insurer would perceive a particular feature on your vehicle as a “modification”, just ask them for clarification. Different insurers impose different rules, and failing to declare modifications to your insurer risks voiding your car insurance.

     

    Now, what exactly is a “kit car”?

    While telling a modification from a non-modification can be tricky, learning the difference between a “modified” and “kit” car is fortunately much more straightforward. An especially good definition can be seen on the Friday-Ad website: the phrase denotes “a collection of body parts and mechanical components that can be used as the building blocks to create a safe vehicle for the road.”

    In a sense, then, assembling a kit car is akin to building a Lego car on a grand scale – but the finished vehicle really does have to be roadworthy. BT points out the necessity of taking that vehicle for an IVA (Individual Vehicle Assessment), “which is a bit like a super-thorough MOT.”

    This test verifies that the car is both safe and legally compliant. Once it has passed the IVA, that car can be taken onto the road. There’s something of a thriving kit car “community”, too, thanks to the array of owners’ clubs where you can learn more about how to reap maximum benefits from the car.

     

    Insurance problems rear their ugly head again

    Therefore, the difference between a “modified car” and a “kit car” can be summed up as thus: the former is a readymade car that has been altered since the original manufacturing process, while the latter is a car built in an amateur fashion from scratch.

    This only strengthens the case for approaching a specialist insurer. Fortunately, the online world is rich in advice about how to obtain kit car insurance at a reasonable price.

    Unfortunately, though, insurance concerns can follow you no matter which of these two routes you go down. Whether the kit car is to your custom design, is a rebuilt vintage vehicle or even came already assembled when you bought it, you should be wary of approaching a traditional insurer.

    This is because, sadly, such insurers tend to undervalue kit cars, leading them to agree cover only for the vehicle’s market value rather than its true value. It’s possible for a kit car to have been modified, too. If you indeed own a modified kit car, the modifications could give rise to premium increases in themselves.

    Rest assured though, although it might not prove to be the ideal insurance premium you hope for, there will be a deal out there that protects your investment – and all the time, money and dedication you’ve put into it.

    Of course, we have to start this article with the brand-new McLaren GT. The stunning new GT car, made for the casual person, that I guess… likes to play golf and loves to cruise around the hills of Monaco. It’s main selling points are more space and more comfort – but not only does it have to be fast, but making it smooth too, what could be better? The vehicle does still hold its 4.0L V8 Twin-turbo, however the torque curve has been altered to fit a grand tourer, so it’s more linear and progressive.

    Ferrari 488 Pista

    Moving on to Ferrari – with the new addition being the Pista, a sort of improved and lighter version to the 488 GTB. Ferrari managed to shave off 90 kilograms, bearing in mind the car produces a crazy 710hp, which can do 0.62mph in under 3 seconds – the figures are getting more unreal each year. It also brings a new aerodynamic body, with the hood that sloops down to the floor. Although it lost the naturally aspirated V8, it still has character with the twin-turbo.

    Bugatti Chiron

    The reputation Bugatti hold with its predecessor, the Veyron series – as there was so many variations, like new special one-off colours and the SS. That comes with a price tag, which isn’t cheap – the car would set you back $2.6 million, around £2 million. That price is just for the car, optional extras are added on.

    Aston Martin Vantage AMR

    Aston Martin being the classic car maker for James Bond – the most famous being the DB5. The new Vantage brings you the most charismatic 4.0L V8. The engine gets to 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds which is made by Mercedes AMG. The car is beautiful to look at with it sitting very low to the grown, it’s your daily driver as it’s such an economic engine but also has a split personality, meaning it can change as give you a racing experience.

    Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

    New to Lamborghini’s fleet of the Aventador series is the SVJ, which stands for “Super Veloca Jota”, which pretty much means “Superfast” – Italian’s have the best sounding language for basic English words. The thing that makes this car different than an SV is the design and Lamborghini squeezing as much as they can from the 6.5L V12, which is now generating 760bhp and 532 lb ft of torque – which is Lamborghini’s fastest V12 road car ever made. Supercars like the Aventador of course are super expensive – but you can always supercar hire.

    Mercedes AMG GTR

    The £150,000 car that, in my opinion holds its value as this car looks and sounds just like what you picture an AMG to sound like. As Mercedes V8 AMG engines are always design to have that deep, mature sounding sound to them, the GTR takes it a step forward – especially with performance in mind that the GTR produces 577hp and 516 lb ft of torque, which is all you need from a car this mesmerising and sleek. It’s the ultimate addition to the Mercedes AMG fleek

    McLaren 720S

    Moving back to McLaren, the new jaw dropping speed that the 720S has – the mid-engine 4.0L V8 supercar 710bhp and with its aerodynamics and lightness makes this updated addition from the 650S and MP4-12C a whole new feeling to the car – the supercar, which is a close to becoming a hypercar from its older brother, the P1. For a price of £200,000 that holds a close performance spec to the £900,000 hypercar, I could say it’s a good deal, but it’s still a price of a house outside of the City of London.

    Lamborghini Hurácan Evo

    The Aventador’s younger sibling, the Hurácan. The Hurácan Evo which still holds the 5.2L V10 from previous generations. The updated changes and additions that make this the “Evo” is its new aerodynamics and the torque and for the first time the Hurácan has gotten rear wheel steering. The big changes is the produces hp which is now 631bhp that can reach 202mph and with 443 lb ft of torque.

    Ferrari F8 Tributo

    Back to Ferrari, the mid-engine 3.9L V8 Tributo that produces a crazy 710bhp, especially with its similar looking aerodynamics to the Pista – what makes this car different compared to the Pista is Ferrari’s focus for more comfort and drivability with that kind of tuning it can compete with its rival, the 720S.

    Koenigsegg Jesko

    Koenigsegg being known for their outrageous designs and performance figures – example being its One:1, which has been classed as a Megacar. The Jesko on the other hand can reach 300mph, on paper that is. The Jesko is powered by the new 5.0L V8 that produces 1,280hp. It will for sure be a competitor to future road cars.
